Nasya - nasal administration of oil

 

 

Nasya is treatment for anything collar bones or above. It’s great for headaches, neck stiffness, jaw pain, toothaches, loose teeth, receding gums, hoarseness, speech disorders, Bell’s Palsy, glaucoma, depleted sexual energy and so much more! It is great when spring time allergies begin to kick up due to pollen, as this is exacerbated by dry nasal passages. It is however important to pay attention to the contraindications as well (see below)

HOW TO PRACTICE BASIC NASYA WITH OIL 

(aka the quick n dirty version - still super effective and worthy!

  1. Warm the nasya oil bottle in a cup of very warm water for 30-60 secs
  2. Lie on your back, and tilt your head back really far, so that your nostrils become parallel to the ceiling.
  3. Place 3-5 drops in the first nostril, close the other nostril and sniff strongly.
  4. Repeat on the other side.
  5. Rest for a minute, and continue with your day

HOW TO PRACTICE ENHANCED NASYA WITH OIL

  1. Warm the nasya oil bottle in a cup of very warm water for about a minute and place a small hand towel or wash rag in a bowl of boiling or very hot water.
  2. Use plain ghee or your daily abhyanga (massage oil) to give yourself a facial and neck massage
  3. Ring out the towel/rag and use it to steam your face (if it’s not hot it can touch your face, but not necessary, just steam)
  4. Lie on your back, and tilt your head back so that your nostrils become parallel to the ceiling. 
  5. Place 3 drops in the first nostril, close the other nostril and sniff strongly. 
  6. Repeat on the other side. 
  7. Perform a gentle massage of face/sinuses using the pads of your fingers along the line of the check bones under the eyes, and along the line of the eyebrows on the forehead. 
  8. Rest for a few minutes

Contraindications:

  • Children under 7 (kids can do pratimarsha nasya, which is very safe, simply dip the little finger in ghee or sesame oil and gently lubricate the nostrils)
  • During menses and pregnancy
  • Immediately before or after a bath or shower (wait an hour)
  • Full stomach or while experiencing indigestion or diarrhea
  • Acute illness, especially fever
  • Sinus infection unless a particular preparation is given by practitioner
  • Don’t do it just after purgation or basti (enema)
  • Don’t do it around the same time as neti - oil and water don’t mix well
